Sensory experiences
after traumatic brain injuries
This website presents material related to a study of the sensory experiences of people with Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs). After a TBI people’s senses can be remarkably altered, with the result that sights, sounds, balance, smells, and a host of other senses may be experienced in altogether new ways. It can be difficult, though, for people to communicate what these feel like and how these changes affect their lives. This research revolves around this predicament.

About the study
The goal is to enable people who live with sensory changes experienced in the aftermath of a TBI to convey what these feel like and signify for them. Drawing on interviews as well creative forms of expression, the research aims to communicate as richly as possible how the sensory transformations experienced by people with TBIs alters the worlds they inhabit.
This research is made possible by an Insight Grant awarded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
Resources
The ‘Resources’ section of this website contains videos and audios that combine mindfulness exercises with artistic ones. These are designed to inspire people’s creativity so that, using whatever medium they choose – photography, drawing, painting, collage, poetry, video &/or audio recordings, to name but a few – people may express what their altered senses feel like to them.
